Lawrence, Jacob

Jacob Lawrence, acclaimed as the foremost African American artist of the 20th century, boasts a career spanning over fifty years. Renowned for his vibrant, abstract depictions of African American life and struggle, Lawrence’s work is a staple in American art history. Labeled the “foremost Negro artist” by thirty, he had achieved exceptional achievements. Rooted in his upbringing within the black community, Lawrence’s most famous series, “The Migration of the Negro,” vividly captures the mass movement of African Americans to northern cities from 1910 to 1940. He continued to paint from his home in Seattle, WA until a few weeks before his death from cancer in 2000.
